The Holmes Scholars Program at Purdue University
The Holmes Scholars Program was established to create equity, diversity and cultural competence in programs of higher education and P-12 schools. Scholars will serve a two year term and benefit from the program through marketability, networking, receiving national exposure and financial assistance. Holmes Scholars are in a better position to receive job opportunities.

Selection Criteria
- Successful completion of at least one semester in a College of Education doctoral program
- Express a commitment to equity and diversity within the application essay
- Agree to work in Professional Development Schools or other school/university/community/business collaborative partnership arrangements.
- Engage in Teacher Education
- Selected by Teacher Education Diversity Committee
Application Requirements
- Complete Holmes Scholars Program Application (See Quick Links to download application)
- Submit curriculum vita
- Submit 1-2 page letter indicating a) professional goals; b) commitment to education preactice and improvement; and c)research agenda regarding equity and diversity
- Letter of recomendation
- GPA - 3.5 or higher
- Brief letter of support from a faculty member stating type of support provided to scholar
Scholar Benefits within the College of Education
- Priority consideration for a graduate assistantship
- Stipend for books, tuition or other professional expenses
- Financial support to attend the Annual Holmes Conference
- Engagement in cultural events and/or training experiences: i.e. Diversity Initiatives Office/Cultural Centers/ West Lafayette Communities
Scholar Benefits within the Holmes Partnership
- A website devoted to scholars' activities
- Access to position announcements from Holmes Partnership members
- Opportunities to participate in electronic networks with other Holmes Scholars
Scholar Expectations
- Attend the Holmes Partnership Annual Conference
- Encouraged attendance at one other education conference such as the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (AACTE), American Educational Research Association (AERA), or the Association of Teacher Educators (ATE), National Association for Research in Science Reading (NARSR), or other discipline focused conference
- Submit one publication a year while a scholar
- Assist with summer camp through the Diversity Initiatives Office
- Involvement in Professional Development Schools Partnership
- Assist with recruitment of future Holmes Scholars
Mentoring
- List of faculty members willing to participate will be provided to the student
