Purdue Mailhome Hints
(How To Make The Most Of Purdue Email)
-
Store
messages on the server for remote access
-
Use your email clients IMAP capabilities to store your email
on the Purdue Mailhome server. That way you can read the same email @
work and in a remote location. See our
Netscape Messenger configuration
page for more info about this.
-
Avoid disk space problems
- If you are getting messages from the Purdue Mailhome
indicating that you are out of disk space, you may have some
email messages with large attachments hanging around somewhere. Attachments
are the really big space takers! You should look in each of your email
folders and sort by size to see which messages are taking the
space. Don't store attachments on the server as a rule of thumb. Always
delete messages with attachments or save them to a Zip disk and transport
that with you off site if you need remote access to them. The Mailhome
generously gives you 100 megabytes to work with. That should be plenty
for normal email communication. To sort by size in Netscape Messenger,
simply click the "size" column header as shown here:

-
Use the Purdue directory to lookup
email addresses
- Your email client may be able to use an LDAP
directory server to lookup email addresses (Netscape Communicator 4.7x can
do this). If so, add a new directory and use the following settings to
connect to the Purdue directory,

Then when you enter names of recipients in an email message, you will be
able to select from a list of potential recipients on the Purdue Mailhome.
