How To Use Video

• Videos can be placed on a web site.

• Videos can be placed on a CD-ROM for those who do not have Internet access.

• Videos can be played on a TV or LCD projector.

• Use videos to provide asynchronous information (i.e. use video to make yourself available to students and the general public 24/7 -- virtual YOU).

• If you have information in a course that is constant from year to year, consider making videos and placing them on your web site for students to watch either inside or outside of class.

• When creating a course packet, include a CD-ROM full of course related videos.

• Make use of SOE and Purdue computer labs during course time to give students access to course videos.

• Use videos in PowerPoint presentations.

• Use 100% video presentations to make your message more powerful.

• Use video in video conferences (i.e. Polycom ViewStation units have video inputs).

 

Video Editing Technologies and Buzzwords Overview

  • NTSC/PAL Standards for Television Broadcast Signals (North America uses NTSC 525 horizontal lines, Europe uses PAL 625 horizontal lines, vertical lines vary with format of signal, approx. 480 horizontal lines are usable in NTSC thus resolutions of ### x 480 are common)

Video Editing Preparation

 

• Determine what equipment you have to work with (digital/analog/decks/computers/software)
• Video capture requirements overview – getting video out of a camera and into the computer
• Analog Video -- need a video capture card with RCA or S-Video Connector, cables, analog camcorder or VHS deck, lots of disk space
• Analog Audio -- need PC sound card and audio cable (1/8" stereo plug to RCA L/R)
• Digital Video/Audio -- need an IEEE 1394 firewire card, firewire cable with proper connectors, digital camera, capture software
, lots of disk space (Firewire HD)
• Tip: don’t daisy chain firewire HD and Camera if you have dropped frames
• Camcorder picture quality differences – VHS, VHS-C, 8mm, mini-DV (see above)
• Disk space averages
• NTSC DV: about 250 MB / minute; 15 GB / hour; 1 GB every 4 minutes)
• DVD: about 50 MB / minute; 1 GB / 20 minutes
• WMV/MPG/MOV: @ 512k bits/sec = 64k bytes/sec = 3,840k bytes/min = 3.84 MB/min;

Intro to the Sonic Foundry VideoFactory program

 

• Importing clips into VideoFactory – The Video Capture Utility
• Choose the directory where clips will be stored.  Options menu à Preferences… à Disk Management
• Managing and naming “video clips” (numbering system)
• Demo capture
• Tracks: one for video/overlay, one for video, three for audio

• Placing video clips on the video or overlay tracks (tennis example)
• The timeline and the cursor

• For streaming video targeted to on-campus users (Ethernet / DSL / Cable Modem): Windows Media Video (.WMV), Quick Time (.MOV), RealMedia (.RM) at between 256k bits/sec and 1 MB/sec
• For streaming video targeted to modem users: speeds 56k bits/sec or less.

• NTSC DV format for printing to tape
• Print-to-tape
• Sending your finished project back to the digital camcorder tape -- this is the master copy of your project
• After printing to tape, use the digital camcorder to transfer your project to VHS or other tapes.  Use the digital camcorder to connect directly to an LCD projector or TV.
• Think of the digital camcorder as the hub connecting multiple devices together.  VHS player à Digital Camcorder à Computer à Digital Camcorder à VHS player
• Create Video CD (VCD) or Super Video CD (SVCD)

Independent Lab Practice

• Use clips in the "My Documents\VF Workshop" folder to create a 1 or 2 minute video.
  • Create a music layer underneath the entire project
  • Use text to introduce the video
  • Use transitions (such as "clock sweep" or "barn door") between some of the clips
  • Use a bitmap image
  • Rotate or move at least some of the clips and/or pictures
