If You're New To the Purdue Community...
(1) You need a Purdue ID card (plastic card with your picture and a magnetic strip) to activate your career account. You can get one at the Card Services Office in the Purdue Memorial Union, Room 130. [Card Uses]
(2) You Need A Purdue Career Account -- A career account gives you access to:
- Email
- Blackboard
- Your College of Education office computer
- Purdue computer labs
- Pal2.0 wireless network
- Many other Purdue resources that require an ID and password
Your career account gives you 500 MB of network disk space for web pages and files!!!
If you are faculty/staff, most likely your department + EdIT has already initialized your career account for you. If you are a graduate or undergraduate student, see the ITaP consultants in Stewart Center room G-65 for assistance initializing your career account.
(3) You Need A Purdue Email Account -- if you're paid faculty/staff in the College of Education, contact EdIT for help setting up your Purdue email account so you can start reading email ASAP. Be sure to set up your career account first! Faculty and staff members will be using the ITaP Exchange server and MS Outlook 2003. If you're a graduate or undergraduate student, the ITaP consultants in Stewart Center G-65 can help you get started with email.
Once you have email, get signed up for College of Education mailing lists!
(4) College of Education Resources
- Office computers (please contact EdIT when moving furniture)
- Use PAL2.0 for personally owned computers
- Departmental file server space for in-house collaboration
- Instructional Labs (BRNG 3rd floor)

(5) Be Security Conscious. Never open unsolicited email attachments and don't download programs from the Internet and install them on Purdue-owned computers.
Use anti-virus software (provided free on the SecurePurdue web site) and enable your computer's firewall. Be very careful about releasing your personal information (name/photo/address/phone/etc.) on the Internet!

(6) Remember to maintain multiple backups of critically important data! Check out our Backup web page for general info and recommendations. Basically, we recommend that you purchase a USB hard drive for backing up large amounts of data. Use DVD or CD discs for smaller project files. We also recommend a small USB flash drive for transporting data to/from the office. Cartoon.
