Art and Physical Education

Students in the teacher education program for Art or Physical Education students are enrolled in Purdue's College of Liberal Arts. Students in this program progress through Block I and Block II as well as methods courses that build upon each other and culminate in student teaching. Four strands are prevalent in these performance based courses throughout the teacher education program. These strands are technology, diversity, portfolio and theory into practice.

EDCI 205 - Exploring Teaching as a Career (3 credit hours)
EDCI 285 - Multiculturalism and Education (PDF)(3 credit hours) 

• Students are generally placed in pairs in classrooms in the local area
• Students participate in the classroom experience for 14-16 hours, 2 hours per week         
    

Purpose of Block I: To introduce the field of teaching by having the students examine issues from a teacher's perspective, and focus on how and why multiculturalism influences education.

EDPS 235 Learning and Motivation (PDF) (3 credit hours)
EDPS 265 Inclusive Classroom (PDF) (3 credit hours)

• Students are placed in the local area individually or in pairs based on the cooperating teacher preference.
• Students participate in the classroom experience for 14-16 hours, 2 hours per week.
• If the student had an elementary placement for Block I, then a sincere effort will be made to place that student in a secondary setting for Block II. If the student had a secondary placement in Block I, then a sincere effort will be made to place that student in an elementary setting for Block II. 
   

Purpose of Block II: To explore the processes involved in student learning and the characteristics and needs of learners with exceptional needs and talents.

Methods: Physical Education

EDCI 429 - Methods of Teaching Physical Education in Secondary Schools (PDF) (2-3 credit hours)

• Students generally visit a school twice a week for a total of 40-60 hours per semester.

Purpose of EDCI 429: To learn and apply instructional concepts and strategies in a physical education setting.
