Initial Teacher Preparation - Program Summary - Educational Technology
Last Update: 3/6/04 *

Description

The program provides teachers with the professional training needed to add Computer Education to an instructional license through the Educational Technology Program in the Curriculum & Instruction Department. The program ensures the development of appropriate skills among those who lead and/or teach in programs utilizing educational technology as well as for all classroom teachers who want to be able to effectively integrate technology into the curriculum. Students completing the program will develop an understanding of the social, economic, and political factors related to the use of educational technology while also gaining an understanding of the cognitive and affective characteristics of learners of various learning abilities. Students will develop an understanding of technology operations and concepts, planning and designing learning environments and experiences, apply and implement curriculum plans that include methods and strategies for utilizing technology to maximize student learning, apply technology to facilitate a variety of effective assessment and evaluation strategies, and apply technology to enhance and improve personal productivity and professional practice. The Purdue Educational Technology program is performance-based and demonstrated by way of a portfolio. Furthermore, students who successfully complete the program demonstrate proficiencies in accordance with the Indiana Professional Standards Board and the nationally recognized ISTE Technology Facilitation standards.

Field Experiences

EDCI 573 Instructional Development Practicum
The field experience in Educational Technology takes place during the post undergraduate experience, generally during the first year of the teacher candidate’s teaching in the schools. It includes observation and participation in the teaching process and program development activities. The field experience is designed so that teachers who have initial licensure and are actively working in their own classroom can use that setting to demonstrate the following skills and knowledge, as designated by the ISTE Technology Facilitation Standards for Teachers:

Standards
III B 1. Use methods and strategies for integrating technology resources that support the needs of diverse learners including adaptive and assistive technology.
IV C 2. Examine and apply the results of a research project that includes evaluating the use of a specific technology in a P-12 environment.
V D 1. Model the use of telecommunications tools and resources for information sharing, remote information access, and multimedia/hypermedia publishing in order to nurture student learning.
V D 2. Communicate with colleagues and discuss current research to support instruction, using applications including electronic mail, online conferencing, and web browsers.
V D 3. Participate in online collaborative curricular projects and team activities to build bodies of knowledge around specific topics.
V D 4. Design, develop, and maintain Web pages and sites that support communication between the school and community

In addition, teachers seeking licensure in Educational Technology must also demonstrate their skills and knowledge, as stated in the ISTE Technology Facilitation Standards for Teachers, through the dissemination of information and training to other teachers, which can take place in their buildings through in-service or mentoring experiences:

Standards
II A 3. Assist teachers as they use technology resources and strategies to support the diverse needs of learners including adaptive and assistive technologies.
II B 1. Assist teachers as they apply current research on teaching and learning with technology when planning learning environments and experiences.
IV A 2. Assist teachers in using technology to improve learning and instruction through the evaluation and assessment of artifacts and data.
IV B 1. Guide teachers as they use technology resources to collect and analyze data, interpret results, and communicate findings to improve instructional practice and maximize student learning.
IV C 1. Assist teachers in using recommended evaluation strategies for improving students' use of technology resources for learning, communication, and productivity.

Uses of Technology

The Educational Technology supplemental licensure area is based upon the standards of the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) for Technology Facilitation (initial endorsement). Courses in the Educational Technology supplemental licensure area are infused with technology. Content is delivered via technology (PowerPoint, WebCT, videos, etc.) and students learn to use various technology applications to create and deliver innovative instructional materials. E-portfolios are created and maintained by the students and are used to document technology expertise as well the ability to create meaningful instructional materials, supported by technology, for use with K-12 students.
