Description
Undergraduate students at Purdue University engage in campus-wide
instruction that will allow them to teach effectively in contemporary
classrooms within U.S. society. COE undergraduates discover
how content can be infused into their future classrooms as
they study with leading intellectual scholars across the university,
engage with youngsters in diverse educational settings, and
study instructional pedagogy in order to foster attitudes
of lifelong learning in all their students. Purdue University’s
program includes shared College of Education courses designed
for preservice teachers in K-12 education. These include experiences
in educational philosophy and psychology, cultural diversity,
learning disparities and classroom management. As they journey
through the various four-year undergraduate teaching programs
at Purdue University, students are encouraged to consider
how learning happens in collaborative settings, to read about
best practices in classroom instruction, and to consider how
technology can help teachers reach beyond their individual
classrooms and into the twenty-first century global community.
The undergraduate Elementary Education program provides students
with a sequential set of classroom and community experiences
that prepares them to be effective teachers. The six sequenced
blocks provide an integration of content and pedagogical knowledge,
while students have the opportunity to collaborate with local
area teachers in Theory-Into-Practice field experiences. Course
assignments are tied to the six components of the COE undergraduate
model, as well as to the ten INTASC principles.
