A person who has completed a teacher education
program through Purdue University may apply for an original
initial practitioner license. Any student enrolled for the student teaching
semester is given a packet from the Office of Professional Preparation
and Licensure at the mandatory student teaching meeting presented by the
Office of Field Experiences. This packet contains various forms required
for licensing. If you cannot locate the packet, if you completed your program
in previous years, or if you are applying for an administrative or school
services license, obtain the documents from the office in Beering Hall, Room 3229 (licensure@purdue.edu)

PROFESSIONAL LICENSE
The professional license is a license of a
higher gradation than the standard license. A person may apply for a professional license
(valid for one ten-year period and then valid for five-year periods under Rules
46/47), if certain requirements have been completed. The following steps are
necessary:
-
Request and receive an
evaluation from the Office of
Professional Preparation and Licensure.
-
Earn a Master's Degree, which includes specific course
work in education and the content areas on the license.
-
Complete five years of teaching experience in an
accredited school. Such teaching experience must be at the level and in
one or more of the subject areas on the license.
With majors and minors, you may professionalize only one area
of your license. However, you would be required to drop the areas from your
license that you have not professionalized. It is possible to
professionalize only a minor. If you hold a science major or social studies
major with primary/supporting areas, you would be required to professionalize
a minimum of one primary area and one supporting area for science and one
primary and two supporting areas for social studies. Contact a licensing advisor in the
Office
of Professional Preparation and Licensure if you plan to drop an area from
your license.
Applicants who met the professionalization requirements prior
to September 1, 1990 are eligible for a professional license valid for life.

Office
of Professional Preparation and Licensure for further information.

EMERGENCY PERMIT
A school corporation in Indiana may request an
emergency permit from the Indiana Department of Education Office of
Educator Licensing and Development. This
license would allow a person who holds a Bachelor's Degree to teach in a
certain area in which he/she has not completed a teacher education
program. The emergency permit can only be initiated by the employing
Indiana school superintendent.
If an emergency permit is granted, the person must
contact a Licensing Advisor at an Indiana higher education institution that
offers an approved program in that particular area. A minimum of six semester hours must be completed from the approved program each year in order to renew the
emergency permit. This license can be renewed only two times. Once the program has been completed, the Licensing
Advisor will recommend the person for the initial practitioner license. (See
Original License.)

RECIPROCAL LICENSE
FOR AN INDIANA PROGRAM COMPLETER
The Indiana
Department of Education Office of Educator Licensing and Development allows an Indiana
teacher education program completer who holds a currently valid out-of-state
license comparable to an Indiana standard or initial practitioner license, to
obtain a one-year, non-renewable reciprocal license. The following procedures
are to be followed by the applicant:
-
If the applicant never held* an Indiana license,
s/he must obtain the recommendation of the licensing advisor from the
Indiana college/university where the teacher preparation program was
completed.
-
The applicant must send to the Office of Professional
Preparation and Licensure a copy of a currently valid out-of-state
license (equivalent to Indiana’s standard or initial practitioner
license) with the completed application, an original copy of the Limited
Criminal History Report, and a cashier’s check or money order for $35
payable to the State of Indiana. Verification of teaching experience
also should be documented if the applicant is requesting a waiver of the
teacher exams. See Note below.
This license is valid for one year. When
the testing and/or recency requirements are met, the applicant must submit
to the Office of Professional Preparation and Licensure a new application,
Limited Criminal History Report (unless applying while the previous report
is still valid), and a $35 cashier’s check or money order payable to the
State of Indiana. The licensing advisor will recommend the applicant for
the original initial practitioner license.
*An applicant who held an Indiana license
that has expired also may obtain a reciprocal license if s/he holds a
currently valid out-of-state license equivalent to Indiana’s standard or
initial practitioner license. Such applicants may apply directly to the
Indiana Department of Education Division of Educator Licensing and Development for 1) the
reciprocal and 2) the standard or initial practitioner license once the
renewal credit has been completed.
NOTE: Teacher exams may be waived if the
applicant holds a currently valid out-of-state license comparable to the
Indiana license and has at least three years of out-of-state teaching
experience at the grade level, in the subject area of the license, and at a
school accredited by a state government or a regional accrediting association.
