A school corporation in Indiana may request an emergency permit from the Indiana Department of Education Office of Educator Licensing and Development. This license would allow a person who holds a Bachelor's Degree to teach in a certain area in which he/she has not completed a teacher education program. The emergency permit can only be initiated by the employing Indiana school superintendent.
If an emergency permit is granted, the person must contact a Licensing Advisor at an Indiana higher education institution that offers an approved program in that particular area. A minimum of six semester hours must be completed from the approved program each year in order to renew the emergency permit. This license can be renewed only two times. Once the program has been completed, the Licensing Advisor will recommend the person for the initial practitioner, 2-year license if the person does not already hold a valid teaching license. If the person holds a valid teaching license, the person will be recommended for the proficient practitioner, 5-year license. (See Original License.) |
