The Indiana Department of Education Division of Educator Licensing and Development allows an Indiana teacher education program completer, who currently holds a valid out-of-state license comparable to an Indiana initial practitioner license, to obtain a one-year, non-renewable reciprocal license. The following procedures are to be followed by the applicant:
- If the applicant never has held an Indiana license, s/he must obtain the recommendation of the licensing advisor from the Indiana college/university where the teacher preparation program was completed. If the applicant completed a program through Purdue University (West Lafayette), the following items must be submitted to the Office of Professional Preparation and Licensure:
-
- License application (PDF)
- Limited Criminal History Report (see above link)
- Cashier's check or money order for $35 payable to the State of Indiana
- Copy of the valid out-of-state license (equivalent to Indiana initial practitioner license)
- Verification of three years of out-of-state teaching experience at the grade level, in the subject area of the license, and at a school accredited by a state government or a regional accrediting association is required in order to waive current state-mandated Praxis I and II testing. Two years of out-of-state teaching experience are required to waive the Indiana Mentoring and Assessment Program (IMAP) requirement.
- Evaluation Request Form, if the program was completed under Bulletin 400 or Rules 46-47, and a $35 cashier's check or money order payable to Purdue University in order to be evaluated by the Office of Professional Preparation and Licensure under the current Rules 2002 Teacher Education Program. Additional courses may be required in content and/or professional education to meet the performance-based standards under Rules 2002.
This reciprocal license is valid for one year. When the Praxis testing, six hours of recency credit (if more than five years have passed since the completion of the program), and the Rules 2002 program requirements are met, the applicant must submit the following to the Office of Professional Preparation and Licensure:
-
- License application
- Limited Criminal History Report
- Cashier's check or money order for $35 payable to the State of Indiana
The licensing advisor will recommend the applicant for the initial or proficient practitioner license.
- An applicant who has held an Indiana license that has expired may obtain a reciprocal license if s/he currently holds a valid out-of-state license equivalent to Indiana's standard or initial practitioner license. Such applicants may apply directly to the Indiana Department of Education Office of Educator Licensing and Development for 1) the reciprocal and 2) the initial practitioner, proficient practitioner, standard, or professional license once the renewal credit of six hours has been completed.
