Indiana Law
The State Legislative Bill 165 was signed into law in May 2001. Although this law deals with Charter Schools, it also includes a "Transition to Teaching" mandate to facilitate the transition into the teaching profession of competent professionals in fields other than teaching. Each accredited college and university in Indiana that offers teacher education programs is mandated to establish a course of study that constitutes the higher education component of the program.
Please note the minimum overall GPA requirements listed below. The overall GPA is determined at the time the degree is completed. Coursework may not be taken or repeated after earning the degree in order to raise the overall GPA. Certain standards and admission requirements may be necessary prior to acceptance into the program. Transition to Teaching is based on the premise that a candidate already has the subject matter content knowledge and skills and meets content standards. Program participants also will need to meet Indiana standards for licensing.
Elementary Education
In order to be eligible to participate in this Transition to Teaching Program, a person must meet one of the following entrance qualifications:
(A) A bachelor’s degree or the equivalent with a grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale from an accredited institution of higher education.
(B) Both: A bachelor's degree from an accredited institution of higher education with a grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 point scale; and five years of professional experience in an education-related field.
Secondary Education
In order to be eligible to participate in this Transition to Teaching Program, a person must meet one of the following entrance qualifications:
(A) A bachelor’s degree or the equivalent with a grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale from an accredited institution of higher education in the subject area that the person intends to teach.
(B) A graduate degree from an accredited institution of higher education in the subject area that the person intends to teach.
(C) Both: A bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution of higher education with a grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale; and five years of professional experience, in the subject area that the person intends to teach.
