A central theme of the teacher education program at Purdue University is diversity. The Office of Diversity Initiatives has partnered with Urban Needs in Teacher Education (UNITE[coe1] ) to provide Purdue students interested in urban education with the opportunity to complete their early field experience in Chicago Public Schools.  Interested students should register for special sections of EDCI 205- Exploring Teaching as a Career. These sections will complete a three day field experience in Chicago Public Schools during Fall Break in October.
 
Teacher education candidates who enroll in the EDCI 205: Exploring Teaching as a Career-Chicago Public Schools Urban Field Experience section will:
  • Embark on a one day cultural immersion in a residential Chicago neighborhood
  • Spend two full days in a Chicago Public School classroom
  • Gain experience working with elementary and/or high school students from diverse racial, cultural, ethnic, and socio-economic backgrounds
  • Network with current UNITE and Chicago Public School representatives
  • Have to opportunity to member a member of student organizations such as SEED and UNITE
