College hosts Become a Teacher Day

The college celebrated the teaching profession with the second annual Become a Teacher Day on April 21. More than 100 students from across the state, including 20 from Gary, Ind., came to Purdue with their parents, teachers and guidance counselors.

They learned about Purdue’s rigorous teacher preparation programs and emerging trends in the profession, and they also had a chance to meet Purdue Pete and pose with the Boilermaker Special. College of Education ambassadors shared their experiences, giving attendees a chance to interact with college students.

The program is designed to recruit students to the teaching profession and to Purdue’s teacher education majors. The event doubled in size since last year.

Teresa Taber Doughty, associate dean of learning, said, “Teachers are needed and they make a difference. We want to provide interested high school students an opportunity to learn more about teacher education, the teaching majors we offer across our six colleges and the positives about being a teacher. While teachers are overworked and underpaid, teaching remains one of the most satisfying professions.”
