What is the Purdue Counseling and Guidance Center?
The Counseling and Guidance Center is the counseling service and training facility for the College of Education on the Purdue University campus. Since 1953, the Counseling and Guidance Center has been assisting people with a variety of educational, career, and personal problems. Current staff members are qualified graduate counseling psychology students in-training who are supervised by faculty from the Counseling Psychology Program. The Counseling Psychology program is accredited by the Committee on Accreditation of the American Psychology Association (APA), 750 First Street, NE, Washington, DC 20002, (202) 336-5979.
Who comes to the Counseling and Guidance Center and why?
Our services are available to University students and staff, to high school students, and to adults in the community at large. Individuals come to the Center seeking personal growth as well as assistance with a variety of career and personal concerns.
Personal concerns often expressed by our clients include:
- Depression or anxiety
- Relationship difficulties
- Loneliness
- Stress
- Grief & Loss
- Career issues we can help you address include:
- Identifying interests and abilities Career exploration and decision-making
- Alternatives to current job/career
The Counseling and Guidance Center serves those whose concerns and problems are not of a magnitude that prevents them from meeting daily responsibilities and those who are not in crisis. We provide no psychiatric or medical service, nor can we serve those individuals with severe psychological disorders. Individuals we cannot help are encouraged to accept referrals to more appropriate agencies and programs.
What can I expect from the Counseling and Guidance Center?
You can expect to see a counselor who is trained and committed to helping you explore your concerns. A counselor will work to build a relationship of trust in which you can explore such questions as “How do I deal with the feelings I have?” or “What can I do to solve this problem?” Your counselor will help you to find or develop alternatives and to achieve a personal resolution for your concern. In general you can expect to be seen once a week for counseling. Counseling sessions last approximately 50 minutes.
How do I make an appointment?
Call the Counseling and Guidance Center at 494-9738 or email us at pcgc@purdue.edu. When you call, you’ll speak to the clinic coordinator, who will pass along your information to the Clinic Director or Faculty Supervisor to determine if the PCGC is the best place to meet your needs. If so, then you will be scheduled for an intake appointment with one of our counselors.
Confidentiality
The Counseling and Guidance Center respects each person’s right to privacy and adheres to confidentiality guidelines. Ethical and professional practice is stressed.
Fees
The Counseling and Guidance Center strives to make counseling services available and affordable to the community at large. There is no charge for either the individual counseling services, tests or inventories that might be administered as part of the counseling process.
Other uses of the Counseling and Guidance Center
The Center is also used to provide initial training for school counselors and counseling psychology students in their Counseling Theories and Techniques Lab courses. This course sometimes incorporates a limited number of supervised sessions with university students, near the end of the course.
