Overview

The College of Education is actively engaged in Purdue University’s Integrative Data Science Initiative. The CoE Data Science Working Group, formed in 2018, guides the College’s current and future efforts in this area. The College of Education offers degree programs, graduate certificates and research methodology courses that provide training for students in the analyses of large sets of numerical, textual and multimodal data. The College is home to faculty scholars, centers and funded grant projects engaged in interdisciplinary research to collect and analyze data that seeks to transform learning and teaching, inform policy and make a difference in the lives of culturally and linguistically diverse students, families and communities.

The College of Education is home to the following centers than engage in data-science related research:

  • Evaluation and Learning Research Center (ELRC) is a recognized national and international leader in education research and evaluation, collaborates with and provides expert grant preparation and evaluation resources to faculty in all colleges across Purdue University. ELRC staff serve as Co-PIs and evaluators on numerous funded research projects. ELRC data scientists design and carry out evaluation studies comprised of large data sets.
  • Gifted Education Research & Resource Institute (GERI) is an innovative center dedicated to the discovery, study, and development of human potential. In addition to enrichment programs for youth, the GERI director and affiliated faculty, staff, and graduate students carry out research nationally and internationally on gifted and talented programs. Research funding includes the Institute of Education Science (IES), American Psychological Association (APA), and the Jack Kent Foundation. One current project includes analysis of a large national dataset provided by the U.S. Department of Education to determine equity in provided gifted and talented education for culturally and linguistically diverse students.
  • The Center for Advancing the Teaching and Learning of STEM (CATALYST) is an interdisciplinary research-oriented center that is jointly sponsored by the College of Education and the College of Science. CATALYST affiliated faculty are PIs and Co-PIs on various grants funded by NSF, Eli Lily Foundation, the Indiana Department of Education, and others which include large-scale data collection and analysis from K-12 and university STEM classrooms.
  • Purdue Center for Serious Games and Learning in Virtual Environments conducts research on the use of serious games and virtual learning environments in education. Data science plays a key role in center projects related to personalized learning, simulations, learning management systems, and systems for creating visualization tools to guide education leader decision making.

  • Purdue University Psychometric Investigation Laboratory (PUPIL)
    Computer lab with advanced statistical, quantitative, and qualitative data analysis software. Consulting space and services to assist faculty and students with research design and analysis.
  • Charles R. Hicks Professor in Education
    This named endowed chair professorship is held by a scholar with expertise in advanced quantitative data analysis methods. Current Hicks Chair, Dr. Hua-Hua Chang, is an internationally recognized expert in computer adaptive testing.
  • Undergraduate Research Trainee Program (URT)
    Provides year-long research training and pairs undergraduate students with faculty to work on research projects.
  • Devito Scholars
    Provides funding for freshman to conduct research with a faculty scholar and participate in a weekly seminar.
  • Honors Program
    Honors students in the College of Education conduct an independent research project under the supervision of a faculty mentor.
