Program Information

Map of Tanzania

Maymester in Tanzania is a study abroad experience open to all Purdue students to earn 9 credits. The four-week program offers a range of unique and exciting opportunities, including teaching in local schools, immersion in Tanzanian language and culture, living on the Indian Ocean, and a four-day camping safari to the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater.

Tanzania is located on the east coast of the African continent. It borders Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Rwanda, Uganda, and Zambia, and its eastern border lies on the Indian Ocean.

Interested students should attend callouts in Fall 2023 to learn more about the program. Students will take a two-credit seminar (EDCI 35001: Tanzania Seminar) in Spring 2024 to prepare for the program. The goals for this course include learning Swahili, exploring the history and culture of Tanzania, planning service learning projects, completing logistical tasks, and getting to know one another.

Safety & Health

Tanzania has been relatively safe for many years. Program participants will be advised to travel in groups at all times and will be required to register with the United States Department of State prior to departure. Participants will take anti-malarial medicine (e.g., Malarone) during their time in Tanzania and several days/weeks before/after the trip. In addition, they may need to update immunizations. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) provides information about health precautions and recommendations for travel to Tanzania.
